Fire Prevention Week, October 2010

Puff and DeeDee were invited by the Selkirk Fire Department to perform for all the K-Gr 3 students in Selkirk, MB as part of Fire Prevention Week. Corey Cagne, Safety and Training Officer with the Selkirk Fire Department was quoted in the Selkirk Record Newspaper as saying "Other departments should look at LAFS Canada... along with the whole presentation it's a hit." We are proud to display the Selkirk Fire Department Logo and enjoyed working with them for Fire Prevention Week!

Open letter comments from Dave Milner, Fire Safety Officer, Selkirk Fire Department:
For Prevention week this year, we wanted to do something totally different for our target group, kindergarten to grade 3. And along came the idea of LAFS Canada. Clowns, music, singing, what could be better than that. Puff, DeeDee, and co-ordinator Gail Stekler, could not have been better organized or more professional. They kept the kids at both shows, including the teachers and staff, engaged and excited, and we can hardly wait to do this all over again next year. Congratulations to LAFS Canada, for your exciting and inventive idea.
Dave Milner, Fire Prevention Officer, Selkirk Fire Dept.

Thank you once again for coming out to do the Fire Safety presentation as part of the children’s activities during our annual community weekend.
Your show was entertaining yet reminded the kids about fire safety prevention and the need to have smoke alarms and practice their home escape plan.
We appreciated you participating in the parade as well. I think it added, you added, a lot of enthusiasm to the event.
Good luck with your future shows in the various communities.
Yours truly,
Bonnie Dayment
Fire Safety Resource Coordinator

Promoting life and fire safety in children beginning at a very young age has been proven to be effective in equipping individuals with the necessary skills to know how to react when a tragedy occurs and to know what actions to take to prevent a tragedy from occurring. The department has recently had the opportunity to witness a presentation conducted by LAFS which we found to be a truly fine example of an educational initiative that teaches children the principles of safety in a fun and interactive manner.

"Kids remember when they're having fun, so kid involvement is key. They hope their presentations will serve to 'enhance' what teachers and police officers achieve when teaching fire safety and prevention."

Thank you for your performance at our Fire Prevention Week Open House. It really added to our program of events. [In the post-event] discussions, many firefighters commented on how [the performers] held the attention of the kids. At home, later that day I asked my own kids and their friend what they would do in a certain situation. And they very quickly gave me the correct answer. So, I must say that your presentation was effective in getting the fire safety message out to the kids. They understood it, and remembered it.
Thank you for your work,
Myron K. Derksen ESI
Open House Co-ordinator
